Dental Braces London
Dental braces (also known as braces, or orthodontic brackets and wires) are devices used in orthodontics for either cosmetic or structural corrections to the teeth.
Often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances, braces serve to align and straighten teeth in order to improve a person’s bite and tooth position, while also working to improve overall dental health. They are commonly used to correct underbites, as well as malocclusions, overbites, open bites, deep bites, cross bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw.
At MEK Dental, we believe in the proper expansion of the palate and jaw to obtain optimum functional health rather than the typical surgical approach of serial extractions. We also believe in early childhood orthodontic intervention by guiding and modifying a child’s growth and development to achieve the best outcome with the minimum amount of intervention possible.
Types of Braces
Braces control teeth movements by different sets of wires and elastics. There are several types of braces available:
- Metal Braces: These are the conventional braces and are more durable and fracture-resistant. Teenagers often prefer metal braces, especially with the option to change elastic colors for different looks.
- Ceramic Braces: These are more aesthetic and are a better choice for adults who don't like the appearance of metal braces.
Why Is It Important to Have Straight Teeth?
- Appearance: Straight teeth are more pleasant and aesthetically attractive, reflecting better health.
- Easier Cleaning: Straight teeth are easier to clean and floss than crowded teeth, reducing gum inflammation and cavities.
- Better Function: Straight teeth function better. Alignment issues like open bites can cause speech problems, while deep bites can lead to TMJ issues. Correcting these with braces can significantly improve function.
- Breathing Improvement: Breathing problems associated with posterior cross-bites and narrow upper jaws can be improved with orthodontic treatment, particularly in younger patients.
What to Expect During a Dental Visit
- Evaluation starts with an examination of teeth in relation to the position of lips, cheeks, and tongue, and the face and profile of the patient.
- X-ray radiographs are checked for any abnormalities and to evaluate the bone and teeth before commencing treatment.
- Photographs are taken for evaluation and records.
- Braces are glued to teeth by a light-cured adhesive in a process called bonding, with wires and elastics placed immediately.
What to Expect After Braces Bonding
The attachment of braces with wires and elastics creates tension in the bone around teeth, which can cause pain and discomfort, especially during the first three days. Patients may take Tylenol to decrease pain, but it is better to avoid Advil, as it reduces tooth movement.
Cleaning with Braces
Food debris can get trapped in braces and wires, causing plaque build-up, gum problems, and bad breath. Brushing after every meal is crucial and will take longer than usual to ensure teeth and braces are clean.
Eating with Braces
Careful eating is essential to maintain braces. Avoid hard foods like carrots and sticky foods like gummies and chewing gum, as they can break the glue of the braces.
Inflammation of Inner Surface of Lips and Cheeks
Inflammation can occur in the first weeks of braces treatment as the body adjusts to them. Covering sharp points with relief wax can help until the body gets used to the braces.
Follow-Up Visits
Patients are seen once a month to activate braces to perform the required movements, including changing wires, elastics, and adding or removing auxiliaries as needed.
